Born Richard Alpert he was known as Ram Dass. Richard Alpert went on a journey to India in 1968 and came back as Ram Dass, the name given to him by Indian sage Neem Karoli Baba. His best known book, Be Here Now, was a guide for so many spiritual seekers in the early 70s, became a countercultural classic, and continues to inform others on their spiritual path decades after its first publication.
Members of the New Dimensions team had the great good fortune to sit in satsang with him in the San Francisco Bay Area in those early years. His was one of the first radio events archived by New Dimensions, Meeting of the Ways, recorded in 1972 as part of an earlier program series. New Dimensions was also present to record a reunion of Ram Dass, Timothy Leary, Allen Ginsberg, Albert Hofmann, Ralph Metzner, and others at U.C. Santa Cruz in 1977. He was a pioneer of the 1960s psychedelic movement and became a central figure in Eastern spiritual thinking among Westerners. He was the founder of two charitable organizations: the SEVA foundation (supporting health care workers serving the blind in India and Nepal) and the Hanuman Foundation, which developed the Prison-Ashram Project, directed by Bo and Sita Lozoff, and helped prison inmates grow spiritually during their incarceration; and The Dying project. In 1997 he suffered a stroke but continued to teach via his website, podcasts, and annual retreats on Maui.
A great soul has passed from physical form but his transformative teachings live on to continue to inspire and infuse generations to come with his wisdom, humor, and love. Be well dear friend.
