Hangaraarac lug uma dhutiyo, which means a centipede does not limp for losing a single leg.
Somali proverb
“I’ve gone through many trials and tribulations and what this proverb says to me is that I am still living and thriving through resilience. I am learning to lean on all the resilience that is bestowed upon me by my ancestors. I continue to not limp and to thrive like the idea of the centipede that does not limp for losing a leg. It’s an analogy for many things. When you advocate for a young Somali girl who’s living under a misogynistic culture, she learned to stand up straight because she has the power of education that’s given her the voice to speak up and know her rights. Because of that I’m writing this book, because of that I’m leaving behind what’s not right such as female circumcision. As Nelson Mandela has said education is a powerful weapon against the many things.”
