“I had the good fortune of living with and studying with Vernon Howard. He was a master and a man of impeccable character. At one time he said this to a small group of students. To understand that, for me, meant to realize something that had been growing in me. Isn’t it strange that so many things that one creates for oneself, careers, authority, position, power, whatever it may be that the world says is good, yet over and over again, like a sandcastle, it’s washed away? [This includes] relationships and other things we’ve counted on as being real and [trusted] would never leave us, including our own faculties, our own body. Life is like being a kid on a beach with a sandcastle and believing that somehow or other that castle is going to last forever. However, it doesn’t. To understand that begins to change what we work for in this life. That’s what happened to me. I understood, because I came to that point in my work with Mr. Howard, where I recognized what I longed for was something that couldn’t be taken from me because it had been given to me a long time ago, and was more mine than anything I would ever create for myself.
